Bellevue's
skilled nursing unit is the in between place for patients well
enough to be out of the hospital but not yet well enough to go about
life independently.
This unit is busy from morning to late
afternoon with various therapies and activities all aimed at
restoring the resident to as fully functional a life as
possible.
Physical therapy works with building and rebuilding
muscle strengthening, coordination, ambulation, and other physical
exercises necessary to restore or maintain the residents former
level of function.
Occupational therapy focuses on increasing
a residents self-care skills, I.e., feeding, dressing, grooming,
bathing, toileting in the use of adaptive equipment when indicated.
OT also encompasses areas of upper body gross/fine motor skills and
increasing strength and endurance.
Speech therapy endeavors
to teach or restore speech to the resident affected by a stroke or
other disease. The speech therapist also is involved in the
re-training of residents with swallowing problems resulting from
stroke or other problems thus giving the joy of food and drink back
to the resident without the fear of choking.
Respiratory
Therapy is dedicated to the treatment of respiratory diseases and
disorders.
